Obituary for Kenneth Elkins

On Friday, February 9, 2018 surrounded by his loved ones Kenneth Ray Elkins rested in his Savior’s arms. He was born on August 16, 1928 to Frank and Alma Elkins at Mangum, Oklahoma and graduated from Granite High School. Upon accepting the call of God to the ministry in June of 1948, he graduated Oklahoma Baptist University with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and entered the Southwestern Seminary at Fort Worth, TX.

While in college at OBU and Seminary he pastured at Alden (near Carnegie, OK), Pleasant Hill (Near Weatherford, OK) and Corn, OK.

Completing seminary, he officially began pastoring Southern Baptist Churches in Verden, Del City, Newcastle, and Pauls Valley, OK, before retiring from Oak Avenue Baptist Church, Ada, OK in September of 1993. Since a calling from God doesn’t end at retirement, he later became the Senior Adult Minister at the First Baptist Church, Ada, OK, worked part-time at Smith-Phillips Funeral Home, and was a Chaplin at the Baptist Village.

His obedience to the Lord, led him to cross paths with Vonnye Faye Dees, with whom he fell in love and married on January 11, 1952. They were in ministry together from day one and blessed with 3 daughters.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Alma Elkins; his brothers, Frank, Bill and Jack Elkins; his in-laws Charles and Audye Dees; brother-in-law Paul Dees; sister-in-law’s Evelyn Elkins and Nelda Elkins-Coates, and Floy Dees. He is survived by his bride, Vonnye Elkins of 66 years; daughters’ Carol Stanfield and husband Doug of Leander, TX, Jeannie Brown and husband Terry of Newcastle, OK and Kenda Horne and husband Jay of Ada, OK; grandchildren; Bryan and Tussany Stanfield, Chris and Amanda Stanfield, Jon and Shelley Askins, Jennifer Brown, and Cameron Horne; great grandchildren; Benjamin, Ethan, and McKayla Stanfield, Ariana, Caden, and Callan Stanfield, and Megan and Nicole Askins; sister-in-law Yvonne Dees of Hydro, OK; and Nephew; Paul Dees, Jr.
