Obituary for Lloyd Mitchell Harwell

Lloyd M. Harwell, 88 passed away on July 12, 2018 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was born on December 7, 1929 in Wetumka, Oklahoma to Roy E. and Alice (Clayton) Harwell. He was raised in the Texas Banner area of Hughes County. He attended school at Moss Public Schools, except for a few years when the family moved to California for his dad to work in the Shipyards during World War II. Upon returning to Hughes County he continued school at Moss through the 10th grade.

In his teenage years, his family owned the blacksmith shop in Lamar in which he worked. He also broke horses in the Lamar area. One of his favorite horses was Old Dan, which was a direct descendant of the famous race horse, Sea Biscuit.

After leaving school, he began working on the pipeline operating heavy equipment, beginning in Seminole before moving to Duncan with the pipeline.

He married Glenna M. Rowland on October 18, 1948 at Texas Banner. Their son, Jerry was born in 1950 while the couple lived in Duncan. He was also dirt foreman/superintendent over the OG&E Lake at Konawa.

After leaving road construction, he began working for Kingsberry driving a truck delivering houses over a large portion of the United States.

After the Kingsberry Plant closed he began working for Hughes County District 1. While working there he built the Duck Pond at Stroup Park.

When he retired form Hughes County, he enjoyed raising and working with his cattle. They were his pets. He loved to hand feed them.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working in his garden. He enjoyed being with his family and being “Papa” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Glenna Harwell, brother Leroy Harwell, sisters Lucille Dyer and Lorene Merrill.
