Obituary for Mark Alan Edwards

Dr. Mark Alan Edwards, PhD age 49 passed away at his home November 19, 2017 in Madison, South Dakota where he was serving as Coordinator of Diversity and Inclusion at Dakota State University.

He was born on June 19, 1968 in Wewoka, Oklahoma, to Patti Sue (Jones) and Boyze C. Edwards, Jr., the fourth child of this union. Growing up Mark attended Wewoka Public Schools and graduated Wewoka High with the Class of 1986.

Furthering his education, Mark went on to earn an Associate of Science degree from Seminole State College, Seminole OK, a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice from East Central University in Ada, OK, a Master of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK, and from South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD he achieved his academic goal earning a Doctoral degree in Sociology. His areas of expertise included: race and ethnicity, social deviance, criminology, juvenile delinquency, corrections, sociological theory, research methods, gender and sex roles; and marriage and family.

Mark was passionate about his work in higher education, his teaching career, and fostering diversity. Prior to arriving at DSU Mark served as Vice President for Student Affairs at Northern Oklahoma College, Tonkawa, OK, University of Idaho’s Assistant to the President for Diversity, Equity & Community, Director for Diversity, Equity & Community, Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs, Director of Multicultural Affairs, and Adjunct Assistant Professor - Sociology all on the main campus in Moscow, ID. At Colgate University in Hamilton, NY he also served as Dean of Institutional Diversity, Assistant to the Provost, Affirmative Action Officer, Assistant Den of Multicultural Affairs, Director of Undergraduate Studies, and Assistant Professor of Sociology & Anthropology. Mark was also an Assistant Professor of Sociology & Anthropology at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, and a Graduate Teaching Assistant/Instructor at South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD.

Mark’s first love was teaching in the classroom. It was there in the classroom that he was able to interact closely with his students. He believed in diversity and tolerance for divergent opinions. His greatest wish was to give his students the ability to make rational life and professional choices, while preparing them for the 21st century.

Mark was a son, brother, uncle, father, grandfather, nephew, cousin and friend. He was a beloved OU Sooner fan and alum. His travels included visits to 48 of the 50 US states, Amsterdam, and more. Mark never met a stranger and enjoyed conversation with anyone and everyone. He was a phenomenal storyteller; leaving those he met with a smile and memories to last a lifetime.

Preceding him in death is his beloved mother, Patti Sue, and grandson Zaiden Jeremih Edwards, grandparents Wiley and Elleen Jones, and Boyze & Gracie Edwards. Survivors include sons Dametrice Edwards of Oklahoma City, daughter Kendra Edwards and granddaughter Zariyah of Wewoka, son Jeffery Edwards (Flor Mirella) and grandson Jalen of Oklahoma City; father Boyze C. (Karethy) Edwards, Jr. of Boynton Beach, FL; brothers Steven Edwards and his children Carson and Catelyn Edwards of Wewoka and Jeff Mason of Oklahoma City; sisters Andrea Edwards of Wewoka and her son Dr. Christopher Bruner of San Marcos, TX, Chandra (Roland) Miller of Okmulgee and their children Kendra (Eric) Gill of Broken Arrow and Kyle Miller of Edmond, Maya Edwards and Shayla Edwards of Boynton Beach, FL, and Jalisa Mason of Oklahoma City. He also leaves to mourn his passing a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, co-workers, and two life-long friends: Louis Nokusille, and Kirk Alan Jones.

The Rosary will be recited at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home in Wewoka, Friday, December 1st at 6:00pm. Mass of Christian Burial is Saturday, December 2nd at 11:00am, St. Stephen Catholic Church, 517 E Highway St, Holdenville, OK, Father Phung Le officiating. Interment to follow at Westwood Cemetery in Wewoka. Repast and celebration of Mark’s life immediately following at Rudolph Hargrave Civic Center 123 S. Mekusukey, Wewoka, OK . In honor of Mark and his love for the Oklahoma Sooners, his alma mater, we invite those who will attend the service to wear OU attire or colors to celebrate his life.
